Domaine La Bastide Syrah 2001, V. d. P. d’Hauterive.
Colour:
very deep, intense black purple.
Nose:
expressive
(needs some air to develop) rich and creamy with loads of black fruit,
berries, cherries, spices, minerals, some nuances of caramel, confiture,
black pepper and even a whiff of muscat and lychee. There is ripeness as
well as freshness in the nose. Quite complex.
Taste:
Powerful,
rich, concentrated and round, a lot of fruit (cherries) as in the nose,
ripe, but not sweet, some spices and a touch of alcohol, warm, but also
fresh, powerful, but at the same time elegant because of the refreshing
acidity. This wine has a fair amount of tannins, these are ripe and give
backbone to the wine.
Finish:
quite intense, with again fruit, but more spices and impressions of tea
and a touch of liquorice. Not very long, complex or refined, but clean
and sound.
* A very interesting wine from
a serious producer in Corbières (Languedoc-Roussillon).
This is an example how power
and freshness make a very drinkable combination. Expressive wine, lacking
the depth, length and complexity of a really great wine, but very good,
with an excellent price/ quality ratio. In fact a real bargain.
- Very good drinking now, will keep for a few years, I doubt if it will improve with age, the straight-forward fruitiness makes it very interesting now.
- Excellent example of the quality potential of the Midi. International, expressive style.
