I Clivi "Galea" 1997, D.O.C. Collio Orientali del Friuli. **HERITAGE WINE**
Colour:
intense yellow with a hint of green.
Nose:
moderately expressive, mature, with earthy impressions of herbs,
spices, some smoke, subtle and complex nuances of nuts and minerals,
some creamy and caramel / vanilla nuances, no wood but sweet ageing
nuances. Very fresh, clean and mineral, not expressively
fruity. Very intriguing, subtle and complex.
Taste:
dry, scintillating freshness, quite full-bodied, powerful, intense,
even compact, with loads of understated herby nuances, minerals and
earthy, nutty impressions with a nice touch of bitterness, outstanding
purity and impressive balance. Intense and strong and at the same time
restrained and subtle, a both rare and beautiful experience.
Finish: long,
intense, fanning out, with minerals, a subtle bitterness, mature
nuances such as nuts and spices, excellent freshness and purity,
excellent balance.
* An impressive and rare
wine: restrained, very intense, complex, subtle and mature, mainly
earthy nuances of herbs nuts, spices and minerals, combined with a
scintillating freshness and an outstanding purity. A wine from another
era, a hidden treasure of classical excellence.
- Drink this wine somewhere between now and 2006, maybe 2007. At this moment the wine already shows some age, but it may keep up some years.
- This wine comes from
another world. It is so different from the mainstream high quality wines
so fashionable today. There is no sexy oak, no obvious fruit, no
expressive character. This wine is all about terroir, elegance,
freshness, complexity, purity and aromatic restraint. This wine is not
made to please the crowd, it is an honest and devoted expression of the
unfashionable (indigenous) grapes (Tocai Friulano 75%, Verduzzo Friulano
17% and others 8%) the climate and the sloping vineyards of the
"Collio" zone of Friuli-Venezia Giulia in Northern Italy. Crafted
from old vines (>40 years old up to more than 60) with very
low yields ( ca. 25 hl/ha) cold fermented with its own vineyards' yeast
cultures with subsequent malolactic fermentation, matured in inox tanks
on its own lees for 2 years, no racking or filtration. This is a wine
as natural and original as you can get. No make-up of maceration
préfermentaire or wood is used, this is pure grape juice
transformed into wine.
