Italy

Rivera  Triusco Primitivo 2001,  I.G.T. Puglia

Colour: deep and dark red with no purple left.
Nose: medium expressive with very warm and ripe nuances of earthy, spicy fruit, a touch of vanillin, with sweet, raisiny impressions of dried fruit, slightly hinting at Ruby Port, also impressions of smoke and Italian herbs. Warm, and sun baked impressions prevail.
Taste: very full-bodied, round, intense, powerful, with many ripe, spicy and rustic tannins, but also soft tannins, alcohol, matched by a fair acidity and freshness, but dominantly warm and sun baked impressions of smoke,  pepper, chocolate,  dried fruits. Many impressions, but not refined, some complexity, but no elegance, very good balance.
Finish: quite long, warm, with ample tannins, some rusticity, many, earthy spicy nuances, a touch of smoke, vanilla, alcohol and acidity.

* A rich, intense and full-bodied sun baked wine from the hot south of Italy, loaded with ripe tannins, spices, herbs and dried fruit impressions, a bit Port like in aroma's, round and rich, but also with a attractive regional twist of rusticity.

- Drink now, will keep in shape for a year, maybe 2 or three, I am not so sure because there are already some chocolaty nuances in the wine. Will become more earthy and spicy, less fruity. Its body suggests a maturation potential of 3 years at least, its aroma's up to one year.

- Produced by one of the most reliable, well organized and quality oriented producers in this part of Puglia. An intelligent mix of modern technology, good vineyards, high quality grape varieties and most importantly deep knowledge, skill and passion makes Rivera a superb performer and example in Puglia. An impressive range of very good to excellent wines, is produced: from the freshest rosé (Rivera Rosé 2004) to the most rich, powerful and impressive red (Puer Apuliae Nero di Troia 2002). This wine is made of the region's famous Primitivo grape, a cousin of the well known Zinfandel. The wine has so much body and extract it easily absorbed the wood impressions that came from the 8 month maturation period on new barriques. Most 0f the time Primitivo stands for more fruit and softness in the wine, this is a more serious approach, blending grapes from two locations (hot with cool) and maturing it on new wood resulting in a wine that is impressive, serious and well balanced.
