Baron von Kripp "Stachlburg" Chardonnay Barrique 2003, IGT Weinberg Dolomiten
color:
light yellow with some green.
Nose:
beautiful, light, fresh, elegant, subtle and clean with vanilla,
minerals, a touch of sweetness (ripeness of fruit), fantastic refined
nuances of bread and restrained fruit, very classy and open, crystal
clear style, impressions of mountain-air.
Taste:
dry, mild, round, but also fresh, scintillating intensity, some
richness, impressions of caramel, a hint of tobacco, herbs, spices,
vanilla, minerals, some alcohol, elegance, excellent balance, very
clean and classy wine!
Finish:
very long, intense, with piquant and very refreshing acidity, also
smooth, rich and with a touch of sweetness (ripeness), quite a lot of
wood, but well balanced, beautiful fruit and minerals, very clean.
* A rare combination of
richness, smoothness and ripeness matched by a strong and
scintillating, refreshing acidity. Has a lot of elegance and a very
clean and crystal clear style wih beautiful refined and subtle nuances
of fruit and minerals. Quite heavily oaked, but counterbalancing it
beautifully with an impressive freshness and great mineral purity,
maintaining its pure and mountain air-like freshness. Organic wine of
high quality.
- Drinking very well at
this moment, is at its peak now, will keep until 2008, or maybe even a
bit longer.
- As you may have noticed,
generally I am not a fan of heavily oaked wines, especially if they
originate from subtle terroirs. Too many times the beauty is smothered
in luscious oak, but in this rare event the underlying freshness is so
strong a lot of oak adds that extra exciting tension and richness to
this wine. This Chardonnay is rare: it still is elegant and subtle
with a normally considered overdose of wood. Maybe the
exceptional vintage 2003 yielded a very concentrated wine and the
vineyard added an incredible amount of freshness and minerals to match
the wood. Maybe this wine would have been too tart without any wood, I
do not know, but I am impressed by this really rare combination and the
resulting excellent quality of the wine.
