I Clivi "Galea" 1999, D.O.C. Collio Orientali del Friuli . **HERITAGE WINE**
Colour:
light yellow with some green.
Nose:
a bit restrained, some spices with a wealth of subtle and refined
nuances of minerals, a touch of buttermilk, some herbs, and flowers,
crystal clear, impressively pure and fine, with great balance, super
clean aroma's not unlike Chablis, with a characteristic subtle
bitterness, perfectly mature.
Taste:
even finer than the nose: very fresh, round, mild, but very well knit
together and intense, some creaminess, some bitters, herbs, and a
dazzling amount of very subtle, crystal clear mineral nuances, some nuts
and fresh bread. Outstanding depth of refinement, purity, freshness and
balance.
Finish: very long, very intense, fanning out, powerful, very
fresh, clean and pure, complex, with a load of subtle mineral nuances.
Outstanding.
* An outstanding wine of
great purity, intensity, subtlety and freshness, restrained but
impressively complex with a wealth of subtle mineral nuances and a
purity that is both rare and delicious. Not a fashionable wine that will
impress with power but a very fine wine with breed and real class.
Perfectly mature now. A wine from another era, a hidden treasure of
classical excellence.
- Drink this wine somewhere between now and 2007, maybe 2009. At this moment excellent, probably at its peak.
- This wine comes from
another world. It is so different from the mainstream high quality wines
so fashionable today. There is no sexy oak, no obvious fruit, no
expressive character. This wine is all about terroir, elegance,
freshness, complexity, purity and aromatic restraint. This wine is not
made to please the crowd, it is an honest and devoted expression of the
unfashionable (indigenous) grapes (Tocai Friulano 75%, Verduzzo Friulano
17% and others 8%) the climate and the sloping vineyards of the
"Collio" zone of Friuli-Venezia Giulia in Northern Italy. Crafted
from old vines (>40 years old up to more than 60) with very
low yields ( ca. 23 hl/ha) cold fermented with its own vineyards' yeast
cultures with subsequent malolactic fermentation, matured in inox tanks
on its own lees for 2 years, no racking or filtration. This is a wine
as natural and original as you can get. No make-up of maceration
préfermentaire or wood is used, this is pure grape juice
transformed into wine.
